24 Reminders that every 24 year old needs to hear

I turned 24 years old this past December. And this was the first birthday that my age sounded old to me. Even though I know it’s not, I couldn’t shake that feeling. So because of this, I wanted to share 24 reminders that every 24 year old needs to hear. (Or anyone in their 20’s probably!)

  1. Stay away from those people that only tell you what you want to hear. It won’t help you in the long run and there are ways to be honest and not entirely hurtful. Make sure you’re one of those people.
  2. Work harder on your marriage/relationship than you do at your job. You are with that person because you know you can lean on them during tough times. Sure it’d be embarassing to lose a job but how devastating would it be to lose your marriage?
  3. Don’t do something you don’t want to. Often as teenagers we agree to plans or to do things that we don’t want to just so we fit in or so people don’t think we’re boring. Well you’re an adult now and if you wanna stay home on a Friday night instead of going to the bar – that is your right damnit.
  4. Take care of your body. It’s freakin’ true when they say things start to go as you get older. Well news flash! YOU are in control of your body – so take care of it!
  5. Take care of your mind. Again, you are in control of this. Just because you’re most likely done with school at this point doesn’t mean you should stop learning new things. Pick up a new hobby, read a book, take the time to write. Do something to always keep your mind going.
  6. Learn to forgive others before they ask for forgiveness. Because let’s face it, most people won’t ask for forgiveness. And you holding onto that anger is only hurting you – not them.
  7. Take care of your finances. Again, you’re a grown up now whether you like it or not. Hold yourself responsible for your finances – no one else will do it for you anymore.
  8. Splurge on yourself. Sometimes you’re the only one that will splurge on you. So do it once in a while, believe me, you deserve it and you shouldn’t feel guilty.
  9. Eat dessert for breakfast. Just the other day, I made brownies and coffee for breakfast. Wanna know why? Because I can. Just don’t let something like this become the norm.
  10. Travel. This age is the PERFECT age to travel – you’re probably on your feet financially, you will appreciate it more, and if you don’t have kids it is definitely the perfect time to travel before you start a family and it becomes a lot more difficult.
  11. Share your feelings. Oftentimes society makes it seem like you need to keep your feelings to yourself. I disagree with this 100%. There are SO many other people facing similar or same situations as you and can relate to those feelings. Talk about them and lean on each other – you’re not ever alone in this big world.
  12. Challenge yourself not to complain. I may do a longer post on this in the future but set an amount of time to not complain. See how it changes your life. You may be surprised.
  13. If someone wants to be in your life, they will make an effort to do so. So learn to let go of those people you never hear from or never follow through on getting together. You can’t be the only one putting in effort.
  14. Make a dream for yourself. I think this is self-explanatory.
  15. Quit comparing yourself to others. You know those perfect Instagram feeds you see? Those perfect models on TV and in the magazines? NONE OF IT IS REAL. NO ONE LIVES A PERFECT LIFE! We’re all human so don’t degrade yourself based off of someone else’s portrayal of a perfect life.
  16. Become independent. If you haven’t already – now is the time to do so. At the end of the day, the one person that you’ll always have is yourself. Stop relying on others for things like finances and happiness. That’s on you now baby.
  17. Be proud of who you are. You’re making an empire for yourself. You’re creating yourself. Be proud of what you do, always.
  18. Life will never feel like its “supposed to”. At this point most people are still getting on their feet in a sense of a career, finances, relationships, etc. If you feel like you’re behind where you’re “supposed to be” stop it! You will get there when you’re ready. But don’t compare yourself to society’s norm – it probably isn’t your norm.
  19. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You will make mistakes so make sure you learn from them. Don’t beat yourself up about it.
  20. Do things that you’re afraid of. Face your fears. Always wanted to go skydiving? Always wanted to camp on a mountainside? Whatever it is – DO IT. Before you start to use the excuse “I’m too old for that now.”
  21. Be honest. With yourself & with others. Always.
  22. Absorb and appreciate everything. I’m sure by now you realize the saying “time flies” is the truest statement out there. Make the most of it, put your phone down a little more and really absorb and appreciate the things and people around you.
  23. Stand up and speak up for yourself. Again, no one else is going to do this for you. Do it for yourself and always stand your ground and stand up for what you believe in.
  24. Don’t lose the child in you. So you may be getting older – but so what? It’s inevitable so enjoy it and make the most of it. But don’t forget to use your imagination, jump in the puddles once in a while, let loose & have fun. You only get one shot at this crazy life – make it worth it!
